The Athlone Indoor Arena was the venue last Saturday for the National Masters Indoor Championships and it was great to see three club members performed brilliant and, in the process, win a Gold, Silver and Bronze medals. John Laste got proceedings underway when he ran a brilliant 400m race to win the national over 55 bronze medal in 69.19 secs. This was a fantastic performance by John, who is more noted as a marathon man. In the final he made a good start and midway through the race he was 5th and gradually he reeled in the 4th man and moved into 4th place with 250m to go. At this stage the Bronze medallist was 20m ahead of him, but he kept the pace going and going into the last 100m, the lead was down to 5m and this gave John the incentive to go for it and so he did giving it everything over the final 50m and capturing the Bronze medal 5m from the finishing line, fantastic performance. Earlier in the day John competed in the 800m final and here he ran very well when finishing a close 6th in 2 mins 40.16 secs, before turning his attention to the 400M final. Then we had Neil Proven competing in the Men’s over 50 High Jump and here Neil put in some great efforts when clearing 1.45m to win the Silver medal on countback. Hazel Galloway had an eventful day. In the 60m final, she had a false start and was disqualified. Then later in the day she ran a brilliant 200m final when winning the Gold medal in 33.81 secs. Brilliant performances by our Master athletes and no doubt they are already looking forward to the outdoor Championships where hopefully our numbers competing at this level will increase, due to these fantastic performances.
