The very popular Cork City Sports took place last Monday night, the 67th running of this event and once again the organisers are to be congratulated on putting together a very good promotion of the Sport with some great performances. Sean Tobin was competing in the Mile event, which had a field of 16 athletes competing. The start was very bumpy as athletes tried to get out fast and Sean had to hold his ground and he found himself in 6th place after 100m as the pacemaker setting a strong pace had the rest of the field in Indian file, which saw Sean running the first lap in approx. 60 secs and he reached the 800m in 7th place in 2 mins 1 sec. Then as the athletes reached the 1000m mark the field bunched together and Sean was caught in the inside lane and unable to get out and he reached the bell in 3 mins 1 sec. The pace picked up very sharply after the bell and soon gaps appeared, and Sean found himself on his own down the back straight, but he kept the strong pace going reaching 1500m in 3 mins 44.59 secs and he maintained that pace all the way to the line to finish in 4 mins 1.23 secs, great running by Sean. Sean now heads to the Morton Mile in Santry on Thursday night as he edges ever closer to running a sub 4-minute mile again. He will be joined at the Morton Games by Kevin Maunsell who will competes in the 5000m and we wish them both the very best of luck.
