The 50th promotion of the very popular Paddy Flanagan 7.5-mile Road race from Waterford to Tramore took place last weekend in ideal conditions. The race attracted a very good entry of over 400 athletes with the Club very well represented in it, this is a popular event for Club members down through the years. This year’s race started and soon a group of athletes set the pace that included Jimmy Boland. Then as the leaders were approaching the first mile Jimmy went to the front and increased the pace that soon saw him draw clear of the chasing pack. Jimmy maintained this strong pace all the way to Tramore to win very convincingly in 39 mins 45 secs. This was a brilliant performance by Jimmy as he becomes the first Club man to win this prestigious race. Jimmy been a proud Waterford man, he will get great satisfaction from winning one of the County’s premier events.
Then we had Angela McCann also running very well when finishing 2nd woman in 45 mins 54 secs. We also had good performances from
Keith O Brien 30th in 47:58, Sean McCarthy 39th in 49:21, Barry Horgan 42nd in 49:27, Elaine Horgan 90th in 54:07, Sheila Perry 97th in 54:43, John Perry 114th in 56:04, Anna Byrne winning the over 50 award when finishing 127th in 56:50, Angela Walsh 135th in 57:22, Mellissa McCarthy 248th 64:25 and Lizzie Ryan 249th 64:34. Indeed it was great to see these members run so well, they all participated in our very successful Morrison BMW Cahir 6k series over the past month and so had plenty of race fitness experience.
