Clonmel Juvenile Club Notes 26th February
Munster medal winning performances from Gillian Hughes, Siobhan Whelan , Gavin English and Colm McCarthy
The Munster Indoor u13 to Junior championship took place in Nenagh on Saturday and Sunday the 24th & 25th and the club was well represented with 20 athletes. Competition was to a very high standard with entries of 30 plus in most races and numerous Munster Records falling over the 2 days.
In the girls u13 we had Eimear Heafey compete in the 60m Dash in which she ran a very good time of 9.96 to finish in 23rd place. Eimear also jumped a new PB of 3.27m in the Long Jump to finish 21st. Also, in the u13 girls Heather Joyce in her first Munster Indoor ran very well in the 600m to place 29th in a time of 2.19. In the girls u15 800m we had three competitors Saoirse Tracy, Laura Cooney and Celine Durand all of which ran very well to place 10th (2.50), 11th (2.51) and 13th (3.02) respectively. In the girls u16 800m we had Gillian Hughes who again put in a medal winning performance at these championships to finish in 3rd place in very fast time of 2.33 to take the Bronze medal and automatic qualification to the National Indoor Championships in March while Roise Flaherty also performed well in the same race with a 6th place finish and Gimena Zapeta placed 8th on her first time over the distance.
In the girls u17 800m Clonmel AC had 3 athletes with Ava Fennessy in 4th place in a time of 2.35 just outside the medal placing but good enough to qualify for the Nationals, Siobhan Whelan in 6th in 2.38 and Bird Moynihan in 10th in 2.51. Siobhan also ran in the u17 girls 1500m and put in a fantastic performance to take 3rd place and Clonmel’s second medal. She too now goes forward to the Nationals. In the girls u17 60m dash we had Hannah Berry who finished 5th.
In the boys u13 we had 5 athletes Cian Flaherty who ran a new PB time of 9.25 in the 60m Dash to place 15th Cian also competed in the u13 Long jump and jumped a new PB of 4.13m to finish in 6th position, Michael O Reilly who ran a PB of 1.59 placing 15th in the 600m and a PB of 3.81 in the Long Jump placing 7th, Conor O Gorman who ran a PB of 1.50 placing 5th less than a second away from a medal, Cathal O Gorman who also ran a new PB of 1.55 to place 10th and Kieran Proven who jumped a PB equalling 1.20m in the High Jump to place 8th. In the boys u14 Odhran McGrath ran very well to finish in 12th with a time of 2.42 in his first race over this distance and Conor O Loughlin ran very well in the 60m dash to place 23rd in a time of 9.51. In the boys u15 Conor Flaherty ran well to finish in 19th place with a time of 9.38s in the 60m and placed 14th in the 800m with a time of 2.41.
In the boys u18 we had Gavin English compete in the 800m and place 4th in a time of 2.05 and in the 1500m placed 3rd in a time of 4.30 both finishing positions good enough to collect Clonmel AC third medal and progress to National finals. Our final competitor of the day was Colm McCarthy and as usual Colm came up with the performance on the day to place 3rd in the u19 800m.
The Club would like to thank the athletes, coaches and parents that travelled to Nenagh and supported Clonmel AC. Our next club juvenile event is the County Indoor Championship in Nenagh on Sat 3rd (u13 to junior) and Sun 4th March (u9 to u12).
