The National Junior Women’s 1500m final took place last Saturday and the Club was
represented by Siobhan Whelan. The race started and soon the leading group was
whittled down to three athletes with Siobhan lying 3rd with 800m to go. At this stage
Aimee Hayde of Newport had opened a nice lead with Siobhan vying for 2nd place. At the
bell Aimee had gone well clear to win the Gold medal while Siobhan was running the
race of her life as she was battling for the minor medals. Siobhan maintained this brilliant
run when winning the National Bronze medal in a fantastic time of 4 mins 29.2 secs. This
was a massive improvement on her PB set at the National Senior 1500m heats of 4 mins
37.92 secs last month, fantastic achievement. Siobhan gained great confidence from her
great run in the National Senior 1500m heats and she built on that with her great
performance last Saturday. Siobhan can now look forward to the National Junior 3000m
race next weekend in Santry.
