Clonmel Juvenile Athletic Club Notes for July 2017
Clonmel Juvenile Athletic Club Notes – 2nd July
At the National Junior Track and Field Championship in Tullamore last Saturday Colm McCarthy ran a very good 800m race when finishing in 2 mins 9.18 secs and just failing to qualify for the final. Colm can take great satisfaction from this performance as he is eligible for these Championships for the next couple of years. He can now concentrate on his upcoming All Ireland 800m race.
Clonmel Juvenile Athletic Club Notes – 9th July
Super Silver for Grainne O Connor at the Irish Life Health National Track and Field Championships
On Sunday last July 9th Day two of the National Juvenile Championships took place in Tullamore. Clonmel Athletic Club had one athlete in the Girls under 14 Walk. Grainne O Conner was making her debut at the National Championships but one could have been fooled into thinking she was a regular. Grainne took it all in her stride and set about her task with utter commitment from the off careful not to overcook the pace in the initial stages. Grainne picked off the opposition one by one until she got herself into medal contention and here she remained to the end despite a number of challenges from Maeve O Connor the reigning Munster champion. Grainne was not for moving and stayed in third place to the line crossing in a fantastic time of 11.43 almost a minute better than her Munster Championship performance some three weeks earlier. The day got better for Grainne when due to a disqualification she was elevated to second place earning a Silver Medal in her first National Championship. Just reward for a committed enthusiastic athlete and one to look out for in the future. We also had Ava Fennessy competing in the girls under 16 800m final and she ran a very good race when finishing 5th in 2 mins 22.15 secs. Colm McCarthy went in the 2nd heat of the Boys under 16 800m and in a tactical race ran very well when finishing 7th in 2 mins 7.52 secs.
Clonmel Hosts successful summer Camp
Clonmel Athletic Club in conjunction with the AAI hosted their most successful camp to date from July 3rd to July 7th at the Doctor Pat O Callaghan Centre on the Cashel Road. Almost eighty kids participated in a multitude of events show casing Walking, Running, Throwing and Jumping along with some educational talks from the Road Safety Authority, Sareen Walsh, and Nutritionist along with some facts and figures from our own members. The Coaches and helpers gave of their time and expertise voluntarily and the Club is entirely grateful for their input. The success of the Camp is very much attributed to this attention to detail and a willingness to go above and beyond and this was evidenced in abundance throughout the week.

Munster Title for Killian Whelan
The Munster B Track and Field Championship took place in Templemore on Saturday 29th July and the club was well represented with 5 athletes competing for Clonmel AC. First up were Killian Whelan and Max Fitzgerald in the boys U11 Long Jump and Killian with a personal best jump of 3.77m took the Gold medal and the Munster Title for Clonmel. Max also jumped very well to record a new PB of 3.34m just outside the medals placing 4th only 3cm away from a Podium position.
These two later went on to compete in the U11 60m Dash, with Killian winning his heat in a new PB of 9.41seconds and Max placing 2nd in his heat. In the Final Killian took the Silver medal and although Max ran a fantastic race with a PB of 9.73, he was unlucky not to medal placing 5th with only 0.05s separating 3rd to 5th places.
Next up was Daniel Charles in the boys U10 Long Jump placing 6th with a jump of 3.26m extending his PB distance by 8cm. Daniel also competed in the boys U10 60m Dash and placed 11th in a time of 10.36 s. Finally we had Cathal and Conor O’ Gorman competing in the boys U12 80m Dash and the 600m. Cathal ran a time of 12.45s and Conor ran a time of 12.53s for the 80m to both qualify for the final. Both lads ran slightly slower in the final as the wind was getting up to place 6th and 8th. The last event of the day for Clonmel was the boys U12 600m and Conor ran a tactical race when coming off the final bend in 4th place had too much pace for most of his competitors when sprinting home for the Silver Medal in a new PB time 1:50:56. Cathal also ran a very good race to finish in 7th place in a time of 1:59:76.
Clonmel AC would like to thank the athletes and parents who travelled to Templemore to participate in the event.
